Synopsis: Scarce Colt 1911A1, Government Model, Shanghai Police, C148938, FB01350 Description: Relatively scarce Colt 1911A1 Prewar Commercial Government Model pistol with matching slide, made 1926, then sold to the Shanghai Municipal Police where major components were marked with an issue number and the thumb safety was deactivated. Cal .45 ACP. The pistol is a standard Prewar Commercial Government model with fixed front sight, drift adjustable rear sight, and matching slide. The left side of slide marked with two line address referencing Colt’s location and series of patents. The right side of the slide COLT AUTOMATIC CALIBRE 45 suffixed by rampant Colt with the right side of the frame market GOVERNMENT MODEL overlying the serial number. Pistols in this contract were additionally marked on the right side of the frame “SHANGHAI MUNICIPAL POLICE” along with a contract/issue number, in this case “59” that was marked on the exposed barrel hood, right side of slide, and right side of frame. Fitted with usual coarsely checkered walnut grips. Although contract features also included a pinned deactivation of the thumb safety, a lanyard ring at the bottom of the mainspring housing, and a special magazine that was drilled with linear holes to act as a cartridge counter, this example has a standard magazine with 6 indicator holes and a pinned unmarked floorplate. Condition: G/VG original Prewar Colt blue with sharp edge wear, speckling, handling marks, and frontstrap/backstrap thinning as befitting a service pistol that has seen moderate/heavy use. Comparable condition grips that are oil darkened with diamond blunting, the left panel having a noticeable chip by the lower screw. Dull bore, easily discernible rifling. Correct manual mechanics.
