Description:
REMINGTON HEPBURN SINGLE SHOT RIFLE IN DESIRABLE .45-70 CALIBER. These were made in fairly limited numbers with this one in the low 8XXX serial number range would be considered a fairly late example probably from the 1890s. It has the later ebony wedge forend inlay in the schnable tip where the earlier versions have a metal forend cap. This one has a fairly stout standard length 26" half octagon barrel that is heavier than usual as the edges of the octagon come almost to the edge of the receiver ring. The barrel serial number under the forend matches the receiver number (immportant). Exc. stock and forend show only light normal hanmdling with fine checkering at the wrist. The stock shows a little better than standard grade wood, especially on the right side. Receiver shows very light silver case colors- mostly faded to silver, with exc. markings. Tight action, tight wood to metal fit. The barrel blue has aged and is mixing with some brown with sharp Remington markings and the correct 45.70 stamping on the bottom ahead of the forearm. The rear sight is a single, non-adjustable buckhorn with a small blade front sight. The bore is fairly bright with fine rifling throughout and what looks to be some leading in the grooves mainly about half way. there is some light and minor corrosion ahead of the chamber. I ran a brush and some patches through the bore and they all came out full of gunk. A good cleaning should bring this one up to about fine+ to excellent. Many of these were stripped for their actions in years past and it is difficult to find examples like this especially in .45-70.
