Description:
Scarce Classic Mauser Model 1896 Broomhandle 7.63MM All Matching Pistol
Offered here for sale and just acquired is this classic German automatic pistol made by Mauser. The Mauser Model 1896, often referred to as the "Broomhandle" due to its distinctive grip shape, is a semi-automatic pistol produced by the German arms manufacturer Mauser. It became one of the most famous pistols of its time and is notable for its innovative design and historical significance.
The most striking feature of the Mauser Model 1896 is its grip, which has a large, distinctive curve that resembles a broom handle, leading to the nickname "Broomhandle." This grip shape makes the pistol easily recognizable and contributes to its unique look and feel.  The Mauser 1896 was originally chambered for the 7.63×25mm (.30 Mauser) Mauser cartridge, a powerful round for its time, designed to deliver high velocity and good penetration. IIt operates using a toggle-lock mechanism, similar to the one found in the Luger P08, though the Mauser 1896’s toggle system is larger and more robust. This toggle action is a key aspect of its design, contributing to both the pistol's reliability and its iconic appearance.  The pistol typically had a detachable magazine that could hold up to 10 or 20 rounds, depending on the model. This allowed for relatively high capacity compared to many other pistols of the time. This specimen, serial number 880508 was made between 1932-1934. Although seeing use, the pistol retains about 75-80% original finish mixing with a grey patina. The serial numbers are ALL MATCHING. The end of the barrel notes an import mark when it entered the U.S. The rear end of barrel has some punchmarks perhaps obliterating a former regimental or police marking. Bore is very good. The pistol has a broomhandle stock and although stamped with same serial number as gun-may have been added as the stock appears to have been refinished or a reproduction/restoration.
Today, the Mauser 1896 is highly collectible. Its distinctive appearance, historical significance, and mechanical complexity make it a favorite among firearm enthusiasts and collectors of military history.
