Here we present an antique Cased Pair of Remington No. 1 Saw Handle Deringers (also known as the Vest Pocket Pistol), made from 1865-1888. These are an example of the .22 rimfire cartridge Vest Pockets. Invented by William H. Elliot, only about 17,000 of these guns were made in total over the 23 years production run. This single shot pistol was made to be very simple in mechanics. Place the hammer in the most rearward position and load a cartridge. The hammer also acts as the loading gate and breach block.
These neat little pistols have antique ivory grips and would have been very handy to have stuck down in one’s vest pocket while paddle-wheeling down the Mississippi River when the poker game went awry!
The overall condition of each is good. Patinas throughout. The actions are excellent. The bores are dim with softened rifling. The ivory grips are a bit ill fitting but appear to have been added long ago. The serial numbers on these pieces are 244 numbers away and we believe these two have been together for quite some time. The small, fitted case is in fair to good condition.
