The J.P. Sauer & Sohn Deluxe Sidelock Double Rifle in 43 Mauser is an exceptional example of early 20th-century German craftsmanship. Produced in 1910, this fine double rifle embodies Sauer's commitment to quality and precision, featuring a classic sidelock action with Greener-style crossbolt locking, cocking indicators, automatic safety, extractors, and double triggers—both of which can be pushed forward to function as set triggers for enhanced accuracy.
The 23.875-inch blued Krupp Steel barrels retain 90% of their original finish, exhibiting patent markings for multiple European countries, the United States, and England, suggesting it was likely built for export. The barrels feature a wide matted rib, a silver blade front sight, a standing rear sight with one flip-up leaf, and an adjustable flip-up peep sight mounted behind the top tang for precision shooting. The bores remain in good condition with strong rifling.
The case-hardened sidelock action is adorned with elegant, full-coverage vignette engravings, showcasing Sauer’s artistry. The steel trigger guard and grip cap complement the rifle's refined aesthetic, while the mechanics remain crisp, with cocking indicators functioning as designed. The action retains visible case colors, though they have darkened over time, reflecting its age and history.
The figured walnut stock features fine checkering, a right-handed cheekpiece, a bullet trap in the buttstock, a horn buttplate, and a matching splinter forearm with a schnabel tip and horn inlay. The original oil finish remains intact, with handling marks consistent with its age. Though the checkering is slightly worn, the rifle retains its classic elegance.
Despite the barrels sitting slightly off-face, this Sauer Deluxe Double Rifle remains mechanically sound and represents a rare and highly desirable firearm for collectors.
