The Detective Special was introduced in 1927 with the square butt configuration only until 1933 when it was changed to the more common "rounded corner" butt style used until late in post-war production. According to the factory letter (which I sent for) this 94 year old revolver was shipped to Lou J. Eppinger, Detroit, Michigan on November 28, 1931 and was a one-gun shipment. From a quick internet search, it seems that Lou J. Eppinger was a fishing lure/spinner etc. maker. I assume this Detective Special, being a special one-gun shipment to Lou J. Eppinger was for the owner or founder of the company and probably not as a stock item in their showroom/store. Production of these early Detective Specials was small especially considering a couple of years after introduction, the Great Stock Market Crash of 1929 brought the country almost instantly into the Great Depression. These Square Butt variants are really quite scarce. This example retains nearly all the original blue- you'd have to look carefully to see any age or edge wear wear mainly on the front edge of the cylinder- minor. The hammer back and trigger show all the fire blue, grips are excellent. Tight action, bright bore, hardly a cylinder drag line. A rare variation and a beauty from the early Great Depression days.
