Description:
c1901 mfr. MARLIN Model 1893 Lever Action .30-30 RIFLE C&R Part-Octagonal Barrel

Marlin’s First Smokeless Powder Rifle

Here we present a C&R J.M. Marlin Model 1893 Rifle chambered in .30-30 Winchester, made circa 1901 in New Haven, Connecticut. This one features a part-octagonal-part-round barrel with a half-length magazine tube, which is aesthetically appealing and desirable for its balance.

Marlin Firearms was founded in the 1870s by John Marlin and was one of Winchester’s biggest competitors for the lever action market in the late-19th and into the 20th Century. Marlin produced a large assortment of firearms such as lever-action rifles, pump-action shotguns and single shot rifles. The Model 1893 represents Marlin’s first smokeless powder lever action rifle. It features a solid top frame with side ejection and a smooth action. The barrel is a medium weight part octagon of 26 inches, chambered in the .30-30 WIN cartridge.

In 1905, the Model 1893 nomenclature changed to “Model 93,” saddle rings were optional, and barrels were stamped “Special Smokeless Steel.” Some shooters still preferred black powder loads, though, and that same year Marlin came out with a limited run of Model 93s chambered for .32-40 and .38-55 and stamped “For Black Powder Only.” In time, the Model 93 became the Model 36, and then the 336, which remains in the line today, although, due to recent ownership changes, the lever-actions are made now in Ilion, N.Y., not Connecticut. The barrels on post-1924 barrels were stamped “Marlin Firearms Corporation”, where pre-1924 barrels were stamped “Marlin Firearms Company”. This rifle was one of the most popular Marlin lever-action models ever made with over one million model 1893s manufactured. This one is in good shape and remains a classic!

The overall condition is very good. Traces of original finish are present on the barrel. Robust, crisp action. The bore is clear and in good shape with nice rifling. Fine stock. Markings are sharp. Nice stag design on the hard rubber butt plate.
