Special focus on custom contemporary muzzleloading rifles and black powder cartridge rifles. Description: Nice example of the New York state militia rolling block rifle. The state of New York purchased about 15,000 rolling block rifles and carbines from Remington circa 1872. These can be distinguished by the extremely high curved hammer spur, thumb lever for the breechblock that protrudes outward instead of up and the safety locking action which automatically returns the hammer to half cock when the breech is closed. They used the standard Remington military round top, rolling block action with a 36-inch round barrel in 50-70 CF caliber. The upper tang has the standard three-line Remington address/patent dates. The Remington Rolling Block would serve New York until the 1890s, and sources indicate these rolling blocks served with NY Militiamen deployed out West during the Indian Wars. This example has generous smokey grey case colors on receiver. Hammer and block have most original bluing. Barrel and bands in the correct white or bright finish. Stocks generally very good, with the right forestock showing dings, likely from long storage. The bore is good plus with scattered pitting. Should scrub to better. No unit markings, but has inspection stamp on underside of buttstock and faint cartouche or initials on left wrist. Nice, very shootable rifle in collectable condition. $800 + Shipping.
