Description:
1862 mfr. ENGRAVED Civil War Antique US COLT Model 1860 ARMY .44 Percussion

Lettered as Sent to Arsenal in Washington, DC during ACW!

Here we present an antique Colt U.S. Model 1860 Army Revolver, made in 1862 in Hartford, Connecticut. The Colt archival letter states that this revolver was shipped to the arsenal in Washington, D.C. in care of Lt. Col. G.D. Ramsay on August 29, 1862. The letter states that their records do not indicate that it was engraved when it left the factory, and it is highly unlikely that this service revolver was engraved at the factory. It was sent with 999 others like it for issuance to cavalry and officers of the Union in the middle of the American Civil War. However, this revolver does bear exquisite Gustave Young pattern engraving and an expertly fit antique ivory grip. The work looks to have been done during the period of use and may have been performed by a Colt contractor, but that part has been lost to history. Suffice it to say that this is an excellent piece of American history with an iconic style of engraving.

The wolf’s head is engraved on either side of the hammer and there is an eagle over the left side of the barrel wedge. Floral scroll with punch dot background makes up the body with small details such as the zig-zag border at the muzzle.

The 1860 Army was the single most used pistol of the American Civil War. Over 200,000 were made from 1860 to 1873, and 156,000 of those were made by the end of the war in 1865. These were excellent sidearms for officers, cavalry, infantry, and artillery troops. The 1860 Army was Samuel Colt’s finest achievement to that point, having finally developed a large caliber revolver that weighed about 2 lbs. 10 oz. to the famous Dragoon’s 4 lbs. 4 oz., and was adopted en masse by the U.S. government with huge contracts. The revolver was well balanced in hand and had a long enough barrel to be effective when utilized as a carbine with the attachable shoulder stock.

This revolver represented unprecedented firepower from a handgun in the field at the time and was especially suited to Cavalry. The Confederacy, lacking in manufacturing capabilities though they were, managed to produce limited numbers of copies, and battlefield pickups of the 1860 Army were highly coveted. The 1860 Army went on to serve the U.S. military even after the Civil War and into the Indian Wars, until production of Colt’s 1873 Single Action Army created new waves in the revolver market, and again achieved great success in the military and commercial markets.

The overall condition is near fine. Finely engraved in the style of Young after leaving the factory. The action is excellent. The cylinder scene is faintly visible. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. The ivory grip has a stable crack on the right heel and is otherwise solid. Numbers match throughout. An excellent and handsome revolver lettered as sent to the arsenal in Washington, D.C. during the American Civil War in 1862!
