Early S. Newhouse Community #6 grizzly bear trap Circa 1865-70, with long trip hammered forged springs and riveted teeth. This is one of the nicest early Community Newhouse #6's I have seen. The pan is as clean and crisp as you are ever going to find and the metal quality overall on the trap is excellent with no pitting. The #6 was the largest commercially produced bear trap and could hold a large grizzly bear.
This Community also has a ROME on the base designating the steel came from Rome, PA. This is the first Community model; the next model came with S. Newhouse Kenwood NY spring stamps, (still trip hammered), and then the final Community model came with machined springs. This trap shows alot of nice trip hammer marks on the top and bottom of both springs.
You don't see these traps come for sale very often; much less ones as nice as this.
