Special focus on custom contemporary muzzleloading rifles and black powder cartridge rifles. Description: As Bilbo Baggins once said, "This is a thing I have never seen before." I am unsure of its origin. Likely French, but possibly German or Austrian. No deinitive ID on proofs so far. This is a very fancy Left-Handed 12 gauge flintlock hunting rifle. Obviously a gentleman's gun. Possibly an officer's custom rifle, based on martial nature of engraving. It has a half octagon, half round barrel that is 41" long. Thr rifling is reversed from what I see in modern muzzleloaders. Bore has very good rifling with some tenacious old fouling or grease. It is coming out slowly, but surely. Some fine pitting on bright lands. Grooves still dark. Bore mics .710/.730. Twist is 1:66ish. The original rear sight was a long, raised groove on tang. A new dovetailed notched sight was added later. Fat brass front sight. Lots of engraving on brass fittings. Walnut stock held to barrel with three captured keys. Horn nosecap. LOP is 12.5", possibly for use with heavy clothing. A padded fabric cheekpiece is held in place with brass tacks. No ramrod was ever attached to rifle, making me think the gentleman had a bearer and loader or for used in shooting pavilion for game drives. Lock sparks well, but needs a proper musket flint. Rifle weighs 6.8 lbs. Impress your friends! $1300 + Shipping. SOLD |
