Description:
In 1979, I got this gun in a barter deal in the same condition as it is now. It didn't have grips when I got it, but I found some Gen. One Gutta Percha grips. This Colt SAA .45 was shipped to Simmons Hardware in St. Louis in 1882. I remember this well because we live across the Mississippi River from St. Louis, and my grandfather had an old 1930s Simmons Hardware four-thousand-page catalog, which I loved looking through. I had an authorized letter from Colt, which unfortunately was lost in a fire.  I could spend $105 and get another letter, but I will leave that up to you. After purchase, if you request one and the letter does not show that it was shipped to Simmons Hardware in 1882, I will pay for your letter.

The previous owner performed minor hand polishing and removed much of the patina, but all the lettering and script are sharp and legible. There is no rounding of edges. I'm unsure, but I believe the barrel may have been cold blued. Even so, the gun looks good. If desired, Trumball or other restoration specialists could professionally restore it. The 4.75" barrel, rare in 1882, elevates its value. It lacked the first click safety notch when cocking and had it repaired at McCellend's  Gun Shop in Dallas. It is 100% functional. I got it as a shooter, not as a collector's piece.  It came with a half-box of Winchester 1950s .45 Colt cartridges. It shot well and was very accurate. It worked fine, but at the time I didn't know it was a black powder frame and should not be used with smokeless powder. IF YOU BUY IT, ONLY USE BLACK POWDER OR BP SUBSTITUTE LOADS. I also used it for concealed carry before Texas offered CC permits because it was made before 1898 and was not considered a firearm under federal law. These worked well as firearms at the OK Corral in 1883, at least for some of the participants.

HERE'S THE DEAL
SINCE YOU'RE READING THIS AD, YOU KNOW THE PRICES  GEN 1 COLT SAAs ARE GOING FOR. THEY'RE NOT CHEAP AND WILL NOT GO DOWN IN VALUE
This isn't a collector's piece, but it has every original feature, that it needs to be collectible if refinished. It works perfectly, and I think it looks good and authenic just as it is. Sure, if you are into Cowboy Shooting, you can buy a new Ruger Vaquero or one of the Italian import SAAs, but this old gal has something they never will have: A 143-YEAR-OLD HISTORY, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, IT'S A COLT.
