By the time this '86 was made, aside from special orders, Winchester was only making light rifles chamberedin .33 WCF and .45-70. Standard rifles in .33 WCF had 24" light barrels and .45-70s had 22" barrels. It seems many more of these were made in the then-new smokeless .33 WCF than .45-70. Takdeown was an option and most had half magazines with shotgun butts as standard. Any features aside from these are seldom seen. This rifle has the rarely encountered special order plain pistol grip with correct Winchester embossed grip cap, takedown feature and checkered steel shotgun butt plate. It also has an express sight with one standing buckhorn and three additional folding leaf buckhorns. This sight was probably added later as there is still a faint line on the barrel top where the elevator bar fit on a standard buckhorn rear sight. Front sight is a blade/bead in the correct short ramp (barrels were too thin to dovetai a front sight). The barrel retains fine lightly aged blue with a few minor scuffs. The receiver blue on the right side is good on the loading gate and thin elsewhere with some good blue in the rear portion and some in the front portion. Exc. blue on the bolt and around the hammer. The left side shows about half the blue with the balance mixing gray/brown. The bottom of the receiver is mostly silvered. Fine stock and forend show light handling only with tight wood to metal fit. Exc. markings and screw heads, tight takedown, tight action and strong safety half-cock. Excellent, sharp and bright bore! A nice and rare 115 year old 1886 in a great caliber.
