The blade has a bright, pewter-gray patina throughout, with thin freckling along the forte, and within the fullers on either side. The maker’s marking is still clear and legible on the ricasso reverse: "C. ROBY / W. CHELMSFORD / MASS." with "US / 1864 / A.G.M." on the obverse. The brass hilt has a mixed yellow-ochre and ruddy-brown patina, while the leather grip has a slightly loose, but intact braided wire wrap. The scabbard has a darkly mottled plum-brown patina along its length, and is in very good shape, without any dents, and very little wear to the drag. This is a nice, high quality Civil War saber, by a desirable maker, and is in very good condition overall. It would make a terrific addition to any collection.; SOLD |
