Description:
For your review is a well kept deluxe 1886 octagonal heavy barreled Winchester lever action rifle in the 45-70 caliber.  It came into being in the 1889-1890 era and has remained in nice condition since.  The action is tight and its bore is excelent.  The stock is nicely figured and has very few handling marks on it and the wood to metal junctions strongly suggest that the gun was never refinished.  The case hardening on the receiver remains quite distinct and has the appearance of normal aging from the past.  There are slight discolored marks on the top of the barrel indicating it had an original barrel sight but at a later moment in time this was changed to the Redfield peep placed on the receiver.  These high quality receiver sights came into being during the first decade of the twentieth century.  The front sight is dovetailed and has an ivory bead on its post. The barrel measures 22 inches in length.  There were a total of 160,000 of these rifles made from 1886 to 1935.  The 86 had a much stronger action than earlier Winchesters and it was chambered in quite a few caqlibers, not the least of which were the .40-82, .45-70, .45-90 and .50-110.  A bit later (1903) the .33 WCF cartridge came out which was also available in this rifle.  During its time it was a much sought after gun on the basis of its stronger action capable of handling larger calibers not previously available in lever guns.  In 1935 Winchester brought out the .348 caliber in the model 71 rifle and this displaced at least some of the interest in the 86 Winchester even though this model was only produced in a single caliber.  During more recent times Pedersoli, Uberti, and Chiappa have made copies of this rifle. This particular rifle is in excelent shape for its age and would certainly add to anyone's antique rifle collection.  Hopefully the pictures will suport my commentary.  Thanks for taking a look.   Jack
