Vintage Savage 720 Customized SA Riot Shotgun 12 GA
Offered here for sale and just acquired is a very interesting vintage shotgun – the Savage Model 720 12 GA semi-auto shotgun. The Savage Model 720 is a fascinating and lesser-known piece of American firearms history, especially when customized like this example. Based upon the Browning Auto-5 long-recoil design, originally developed by John Moses Browning. Savage manufactured the 720 under license during the 1930s and 1940s. Many used during WWII for training and limited military use (designated as "riot" or "trench" guns in some cases). gauge
The barrel has been cut down or replaced with a 20" barrel – a common modification for riot guns. Savage did offer engraved models, and this still is an attractive one. The shotgun is well used but sound, with a nice bore. Original hard rubber buttplate was replaced long ago with a recoil pad. A great piece to tinker around with in the field.
