Description:
Winchester Model 1873 rifle, caliber 44 WCF aka 44-40. This is an early Third Model having the dust cover rail integral with the receiver. Features a special order 26" long octagon barrel with full magazine, 2" longer than standard. The plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, crescent butt with rifle style trap door butt plate, blued and case hardened finish, open sights, are all standard features. Cody Musuem email sheet confirms configuration and shows an October 01, 1883 ship date to order number 7696 (sheet will be provided).
CONDITION: All metal parts retain 60% original finish that have a dark brown/plum mix, typical of firearms that spent many years in the humid Deep South. Bore is a 7.5 of 10 with very good rifling, some light pitting, no rings or bulges, properly working action including the half cock safety. Stocks are still tight and proud in most locations except some loss at the butt stock toe due to wear, otherwise exhibiting typical nicks/dings/scratches but no splits or cracks. Assembly numbers match on upper inletting of butt stock and left side of lower tang. Mag tube is tight with no wobble. Sights are original except for the rear sight elevator. Proper for this vintage, there is no caliber marking on the barrel and brass cartridge lifter. In all, it grades NRA Antique Very Good. The extra long barrel and desirable caliber are all highly collectible features. Not a mint specimen by any means, it still will nicely fill a void in any Winchester collection while increasing in value over time.
