During World War II, due to the shortage of shotguns, the government ordered all manufacturers of shotguns to convert facilities to the production of 12 Ga shotguns for military use. That’s how this particular shotgun came to have a U.S. Ordnance flaming bomb stamped on the top of its barrel.
After the war, this shotgun reverted to civilian ownership and, at some point, became the property of a Major Grubbs of the 9th Infantry Division. The tag showing this as his personal firearm remains affixed to the stock.
The shotgun is chambered for 12 Gauge, 2-3/4 inch shells. The barrel is marked as a Cylinder choke but an adjustable Poly Choke has been affixed to the end of the barrel. The barrel itself is approximately 24 inches in length with the total length being 27 inches with the Poly Choke.
Serial number of the gun is 466657. The XL date code corresponds to a manufacture date of December, 1942 which is in line with the Ordnance stamp on the barrel.
Game scenes are stamped on the left and right side of the receiver. Magazine capacity of this model shotgun was typically 2+1, even in the military configuration.
Tape covers a portion of the forend. This is likely to cover a missing piece of the forend but we have not removed the tape. The action functions as expected. The bore is clean and the barrel is bright. The buttstock is in mostly Good condition. The receiver has some light oxidation on the right, rear side.
This particular shotgun is not in Mint condition but it is a very near part of history. It’s reasonably priced and definitely worth a look to see if this is one to add to your collection.
