Description: Very Rare Documented Factory Error Two-Line Address Etched Panel 5 ½" Model 1873 Colt Frontier Six-Shooter Single Action Army Revolver, Nickel Plated with Ivory Grips, .44-40 WCF, mfg. 1882. This is a really special Colt in an extremely unusual configuration. First off any etched panel Frontier Six Shooter with a 5 ½" barrel is rare. They simply did not make many 5 ½" guns during the period in which the acid etched Colt Frontier Six Shooter logo was in use. Throughout the Colt Single Action Army's manufacture from 1873-1940 standard 5 ½" and 7 ½" barrels received the long single-line Colt address while the 4 ¾" barrels were stamped with the smaller two-line address however there were a couple very small windows of time during production, likely only days or even hours, where these were mixed up due to human error. This error is noted in Keith Cochran's “Colt Peacemaker Encyclopedia Volume 1” page 144 & 145 (see last photos). In all our years of collecting Colts this is probably only the second or third example we have ever seen and those were 7 ½" guns. The included factory letter confirms the gun's original configuration as .44-40 caliber, 5 ½" barrel, nickel plated, stocks not listed, shipped to Hartley & Graham, New York, New York, on June 7th, 1882. Hartley & Graham was one of the premier firearms retailers in the country and sold countless guns to dealers and individuals across the nation through their popular catalogs. The ivory grips would have been fitted by them in New York prior to resale. Overall the gun retains approximately 35-40% bright original nickel finish with the balance worn and well blended to a smooth silver patina. Original retailer installed ivory grips have a fantastic swirled yellow/brown color with natural grain checking and a thin worn over 1" long chip at the left lower front corner. They have a great look and feel and fit perfectly flush on the butt with shrinkage and undersized wear along the gripstraps. Clear two-line address, patent dates, “44" marked barrel, “44 CF” marked triggerguard, and matching serial number “79404” stamped on the frame, triggerguard, and backstrap. The acid etched Colt Frontier Six Shooter marking is worn and they usually are with only “COLT FRONTIER..” and some of the boarder visible. Original blade front sight, bullseye ejector with brass spring, loading gate, trigger, cylinder pin, and screws excepting for one triggerguard screw which may be a replacement. The long-knurled hammer is of the correct vintage but appears to have been case colored as opposed to nickeled or fire blued so it may or may not be original to this gun. The first safety position is absent but otherwise the action functions crisp and smooth with four clicks and a little extra hammer travel at full cock. Cylinder locks up perfectly on time with little to no play. Nice bore for a Colt of this age showing very sharp and relatively bright rifling front to back with light/moderate blackpowder frosting and superfine pinprick pitting scattered throughout. A super rare Colt Single Action that would be a fascinating addition to even the most advanced collection. I highly doubt you will ever see another. *NOTE* Due to ivory restrictions this pistol will not be sold or shipped to residents of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, or Washington.
