Description:
Fine WWII Dated Springfield M1 Garand .30-06 CMP Program Collector Grade
Offered here for sale and just acquired is this excellent WWII Period Springfield U.S. M1 Garand Collector Grade sold through the CMP Program decades ago.

This WWII period Springfield U.S. M1 Garand is a newly acquired collectible- the classic Springfield M1 Garand .30-06 caliber. As collectors are aware of the Garand’s WWII provenance, many of the rifles were re-purposed during the Korean War and continued in the military. This fine example of a Springfield Armory M1 Garand that passed through the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP)—a route many collectors and enthusiasts rely on for authentic U.S. military surplus rifles. This specimen has an earlier vintage that being made in WWII.
M1 Garand Overview:
  • Model: M1 Garand
  • Manufacturer: Springfield Armory
  • Serial Number: 518283
  • Date of Manufacture: March, 1942

Historical Context:
The M1 Garand with serial number 518283 falls into a production period during World War era. With serial number range for early, 1942 approximately 510,000 to 540,000, the rifle would have been produced shortly following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor Dec, 1941 (production rapidly ramping up to supply troops heading into combat).

CMP Details:
The Civilian Marksmanship Program is a federally chartered organization that sells surplus military firearms to qualified U.S. citizens. Rifles from CMP often undergo inspection, parts change, cleaning, and grading. Your rifle is described as:
  • CMP Finish Retained: This suggests that the parkerizing is original or expertly redone by the CMP, which is known for professional restoration.
  • Superb Wood with Excellent Figuring: This could indicate either a beautiful walnut stock with noticeable grain and contrast, or even one of the rarer curly or tiger-striped pieces that occasionally surface.
  • Pristine Condition: Uncommon for rifles of this age, implying it was either unissued, lightly used, or meticulously preserved and offered and rated by the CMP as a COLLECTOR GRADE item and this one even included the “CMP” cartouche on the side of the stock.
A Springfield Armory Garand in pristine CMP condition from 1942, especially with outstanding wood and correct finish, is highly desirable among collectors and shooters alike. While early WWII Garands are prized for history, late-model guns like this are often in better condition and more practical for range use.
If the rifle retains its original parts (bolt, barrel, op rod, trigger group) and those components match 1942 production (or are marked “SA” for Springfield Armory), it would significantly add to the value. It appears that the gas port is marked 4-63 with all other parts Springfield marked.

Estimated Value (as of 2025):
  • Service Grade CMP rifles from this period typically range between $1,200–$1,800.
  • However, a pristine, well-figured-stock example like this could command a collector premium—potentially $2,500–$3,500, depending on matching parts, condition, and market interest.
