ARISAKA Type 99 Series 35 Kokura Arsenal 7.7mm Jap WWII Anti-Aircraft Sight

Nice detailed markings on this rifle. Allegedly, this is a WWII bring-back. Story told that this was passed down through the family. The granddaughter can no longer possess firearms, although is keeping the bayonet. The rifle DOES NOT have import markings and thus supports their story. No written providence is available, only their word and a few other WWII relics shown as proof their grandfather was in WWII. Therefore, this is likely a bring-back WWII rifle.

About this rifle. This is a Japanese World War II issued Arisaka Type 99 Series 35 rifle. The single vent hole and the stamp identify this as a Type 99. The Japanese writing translates to \"Type 99\" as a reference to the year the rifle was adopted, 1939 or on the Japanese Calendar 2599. The \"MUM\" chrysanthemum with 16 petals (the symbol of the Japanese Emperor) is stamped on the receiver of this rifle as it was manufactured for the Imperial Japanese Army, indicating that the rifle belonged to the Emperor. Many rifles imported, sent to other countries for their wars. Many rifles retrieved later after the Emperor‚‚s reign, had the \"MUM\" removed or heavily defaced. The chrysanthemum was at least partially or wholly ground off on rifles that were surrendered after the war, apparently as a face-saving gesture to the Japanese as their rifles (The Emperor’s Rifles) were taken out of Japan and sold off. Rifles captured in the field, however, normally have the chrysanthemum symbol intact. The Type designation was stamped into the top of the receiver using the character shiki for \"type\" and Japanese numerals. The shiki character and the characters for the Japanese numerals and all insignia are intact; Again supporting the family story of a bring-back rifle at the end of WWII.

The rifle stamps on the barrel are a clear and near mint \"MUM\" (chrysanthemum) and \"99 Type\" in Japanese. On the left side of the receiver are the series mark (indicating a series 35), followed by the serial number (38949), and then the arsenal manufacturing insignia. The two stamps after the arsenal stamp are from the inspectors as proof marks. This rifle was manufactured at the Kokura Arsenal. The rifle is a \"Short\" and one of up to around 57,000 manufactured. This is a small portion of the millions of Arisaka‚‚s manufactured, let alone surviving wartime and then bring-back, not imported and stamped as required by ATF import laws. This rifle was also made prior to any last-ditch end-of-war rifles that had a wood butt-plate and knobs that did not have detailed serrations (knurled knobs) or dust covers (metal was scarce as Japan began losing the war).

Rifle details: 7x58mm Arisaka cal., Mauser inspired bolt action, 26 in. barrel length, 5 shot internal box magazine, one-piece bolt construction, controlled feed Mauser style extractor, adj. rear peep style ladder sight with folding anti-aircraft lead arms, fixed shrouded front blade sight, full-length wooden stock, full-length upper handguard, bottom mounted sling swivels, metal buttplate (NOT A LAST DITCH MADE OF WOOD), finger grooves on forearm, knurled knob style safety located on the rear of the bolt body, straight bolt handle, action operated sliding dust cover, lever-style bolt release with integral ejector, folding monopod attached to rear barrel band, blued finish. Mfg. 1939-1945.

This Arisaka Type 99 Series 35 is in very good shape as shown in the photographs. The barrel still has visible rifling and a bore scope confirmed a nice shootable barrel. The barrel needs another cleaning and oiling as this has been a family heirloom safe queen for many years. A very cool piece of WWII history wrapped up with a shootable rifle.
