Description:
NSN, .50 CF, 36 5/8" barrel with a fine, bright bore. This is a handsome rifle that has some traces of the original blue remaining on the breechblock assembly, while the 1864 dated lockplate has a small portion of the original, muted color case-hardening remaining. The remainder of the metal has acquired a smooth, dull pewter patina throughout. The lock and mechanical components are fully functional. The nut on the left side of the screw holding the breechblock looks to be a replacement. The walnut stock has an old, military oil finish, and is in fine condition with crisp and clear cartouches, as well as a few short, with-the-grain cracks on the lefts side ahead of the lock screw bolsters. Included is the original US Model 1855 socket bayonet and scabbard. The bayonet measures 21" overall, with an 18" angular blade having a single fuller and hollow-ground back flutes. The blade has spots of dark freckling mottling the dark gray patina, with a mild brown-gray color on the socket and shank. The leather scabbard and attached frog are in very good shape, although the internal metal scabbard tube is missing. The rifle comes with a slightly short ramrod, and is a very good plus example of a desirable 2nd Model Allin Conversion that would make a nice addition to a collection. Antique;
