Lancaster, PA has been referred to as the “Mecca” of American rifle-making and is considered the cradle of the long rifle as it was a place where especially German immigrants found a home as well as a niche making one of the essential implements of that day. This example’s octagonal barrel is in .44 caliber, has been decorated in various German silver placards, and has double set triggers. This rifle is typical of the tools that were quintessential for life in North America and the frontier in the 19th Century. Whether a mountain man, trapper, trader, rancher or farmer, all these pioneers had to have something to put meat over the fire and protect themselves from predators of both two- and four-legged varieties. Rifle manufacture in the mid-to-late 19th Century was rapidly changing over from thousands of craftsmen all over the United States and on the Frontier making and selling their wares, to the large factories with standardized assembly lines and modern manufacturing techniques. Many of the maker’s names of these percussion rifles have been lost over time. This is one such example. The overall condition is good. The barrel presents with a smooth, dark patina. The stock has been re-oiled. Strong action, and fully functioning set trigger. The bore is in good shape for its age with serviceable rifling. Stable cracks and repairs, especially around the lock. “LANCASTER” is marked atop the barrel and is faint. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 40-1/2 inches. Caliber: .44 Percussion Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING WORLDWIDE. Delivered directly to your door by express mail!
