Description:

Antique Mexican copy of a Colt Single Action army. This example has a black powder frame, Chambered in 44-40, it likely saw hard use on the frontier during american westward expansion as the 44-40 cartridge was also chambered for the Winchester 1873. It has all of the charm & looks of one of the most desireable gun in american history. Cavalry’ length barrel of 7-1/2”, 1 piece walnut grips.

The finish shows nice patina as one would expect, but this tells the story of where it’s been. The action is in good working order with 4 hammer clicks, proper timing when cocked deliberately, minimal cylinder movement, slight endshake. Extractor housing has a small crack towards the front, but feels solid against the barrel. The bore shows distinct rifling with a coat of fouling as one would expect. However i have shot this and found that it is accurate.

There are little to no markings on this gun, aside from serial number , assembly numbers, & cartouches on the grip. The frame appears to have a different set of numbers than the rest of the gun. However the assembly numbers all match somehow. The grips also have a faint cartouche stamp resembling JEG or John E Greer, which means they may be original however im not 100% certain on this. John E Greer was the US Ordnance inspector of Colt Cavalry revolvers from 1882-1884.

There is certainly an interesting story to this SAA. Perhaps this gun was sold to a Mexican Vaquero as it was much more affordable than an authentic Colt. Who knows. Definitely a neat addition to anyones collection!
