Marlin 336ADL, caliber 30-30 Winchester, 24" round barrel, factory 2/3 magazine, plain walnut stocks with factory checkering, shotgun butt with serrated hard rubber butt plate, "waffle top" non-glare receiver, open sights, factory sling swivel studs, blued finish, serial number E6604, first year production made 1948.
CONDITION: Overall blue is 80% with some spots of scratching and wear due to hunting and carry use. Original sights are intact but front sight hood is missing. Stocks are sound with no splits or cracks, checkering still quite sharp, never refinished, Marlin trademark "Bullseye" present in the toe line of the butt stock. Barrel has the "JM" stamp on the right side ahead of the receiver, Ballard style rifling, and the bore is mint, a 9.9 of 10. Mag tube is tight with no wobble. Butt plate still tight and even with no chips. Action is butter-smooth with a properly working half cock safety. Thankfully no one drilled holes in the waffle top receiver, it remains as it left the factory. Overall grades NRA Excellent; will make a fine shooter and collector.
***** UPDATED 8/9/2025 - TO ANSWER MULTIPLE QUESTIONS FROM SEVERAL WATCHERS ***** - The barrel is marked 336A with another A among the dashes. The serial number on the left upper tang and on the butt stock match the visible serial number on the lower tang. In checking the Brophy book again, the first year/first variation of these had several markings and names; with this rifle I should really have listed it as a 336A Deluxe and not an ADL as was used a couple of years later. Fit, finish, numbers all match so I know it's 100% correct and original. Hope this helps.
