Origins:
  • The Luger pistol, officially known as the Pistole Parabellum, was designed by Georg Luger and manufactured by Deutsche Waffen- und Munitionsfabriken (DWM).
  • The Artillery Model, also known as the Lange Pistole 08 (LP.08), was developed in 1914 at the start of World War I to give German artillery crews, stormtroopers, and later aviators a more effective long-range sidearm.
World War I:
  • The LP.08 was issued primarily during WWI to specialized troops.
  • Equipped with an adjustable rear tangent sight (up to 800 meters) and shoulder stock (not included), making it a sort of compact carbine.
  • Saw use in trench warfare, where its higher accuracy and range were valued.
Post-WWI:
  • After WWI, many surviving LP.08s were stored, sold, or repurposed.
  • Some were used in the Weimar Republic, by paramilitary units (Freikorps), and occasionally reissued during the early stages of World War II (mostly for second-line use or training).
  • They were also exported in limited numbers.
Wars Used In
  • World War I (1914–1918): Primary and original deployment.
  • German Revolution / Weimar unrest (1918–1923): Used by Freikorps and other factions.
  • World War II (1939–1945): Very limited and secondary use; most had been replaced by newer sidearms like the P.38.
