Description:
Classic Early Antique W&J Rigby Percussion Pepperbox Pistol C. 1840-1850s

Offered here for sale and newly acquired from a fine collection of antique firearms is this classic percussion English pepperbox pistol made by the famed firm of W&J Rigby.
The firm traces back to John Rigby in Dublin around 1775 (or possibly back to 1735), making sporting guns, pistols, blunderbusses, muskets, etc. By 1781 Rigby was firmly in business as a maker of custom firearms. After John Rigby’s death in 1818, his sons William and John Jason ran the firm as W. & J.?Rigby, operating from 24 Suffolk Street, Dublin until about 1865. During this period they advanced rifling technology and produced sporting, duelling and pocket pistols, including percussion pepper?boxes.
Rigby exhibited successfully at the Great Exhibition (London) 1851 and Paris Exhibition 1855, gaining international recognition. By the 1890s, the Dublin operations had been sold, and by 1897 the company was exclusively based in London.
This specimen is all original and in very good used condition. It has 3-5/8” barrels and has a serial number of “9944” stamped on frame. Double action. Overall it shows use and exhibits a grey-brown patina with some very fine “pin-prick” patina in places but for the most part very smooth with legible markings extant. The grips have use marks but also solid.
It is very difficult to obtain such early examples of Rigby pepperboxes in any condition. Competing with American maker Ethan Allen of Worcester, Massachusetts and later superceded by the revolving arms of Samuel Colt, Rigby was a major player in the mid 19th century when it came to revolving arms.Bottom of Form
