M1882 MAYNARD Patent .22 RF Hunting/TARGET Rifle 1880s MASSACHUSETTS Manufactured SPORTING Rifle Here we present an antique Massachusetts Arms Company Maynard Patent Model 1882 Rifle, made circa the 1880s in Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The Maynard M1882 hunting and target rifle was crafted by Edward Maynard and was in production for about a decade, from 1882 to the mid-1890s. Though some folks might have thought it looked a bit plain or “ugly,” it was actually quite popular among shooters because of its reliability and accuracy. One of its standout features was that it was among the first rifles to offer quickly interchangeable barrels in different calibers, giving shooters versatility and convenience. Edward Maynard first made his mark in 1845 with a patent for a priming system that used a tiny mercury fulminate charge to ignite the percussion cap. This invention proved successful enough that the U.S. government paid him a dollar for each weapon made with his method. By 1855, all the military rifles and carbines of the 1855 model in .58 caliber were built using his design. In 1851, Maynard also patented a breech-loading rifle, a significant innovation at the time. During the Civil War, the Confederacy favored this breech-loading system because it didn’t require the large, expensive machinery needed for traditional gun manufacturing. Recognizing the potential, Maynard established the Maynard Arms Company in 1857 and teamed up with the Massachusetts Arms Company to produce his carbines. Remarkably, the Maynard breech-loader was one of the few patented designs from that era to see continued production after the war. It remained a popular choice for hunting and target shooting well into the 1890s, cementing its place in firearms history. The overall condition is very good. Deep brown barrel patina.
