Frank Wesson was the younger brother of Daniel B. Wesson of Smith & Wesson fame. Knowing his family's reputation, Frank made a name for himself as a talented firearms designer. In 1859, he patented his innovative two-trigger rifle, which was lightweight, slim, and easy to handle. During the Civil War, Wesson’s .44 caliber rimfire carbine was designed mainly for cavalry troops. While it’s unclear if Union soldiers used these carbines, several state militias in Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas, and Ohio bought them. Interestingly, William B. Edwards noted that they were quite popular among guerrillas and irregular fighters on the border. What makes Wesson’s rifle stand out is its unique two-trigger setup: pulling the front trigger opens the breech after placing the hammer in half-cock. The design also features a stop on the barrel to limit pivoting and a separate iron trigger guard that acts like a pistol grip. Wesson continued making these rifles until 1888, leaving behind a legacy of innovative firearms during a fascinating period in American history. The overall condition is very good.
