Description:
The rifle is actually in pretty good condition as the shooter it really is. The 788 was designed to be a value-priced rifle for the everyday sportsman who needed a rifle for deer hunting once or twice per year. Or the farmer who needed a tool gun for pest control. This was the market that Savage/Stevens, and various importers had served for years and Remington wanted a piece of it. The crazy part is, the shooting public found out that they "shot" like gangbusters. The rifles feature an interrupted thread at the rear of the bolt for lockup, similar to many cannons. This resulted in a very inexpensive plain cylinder action that was exceptionally smooth in operation. The stocks were made to a Monte Carlo pattern from what appears to be birch or beech, stained to appear a little walnut-like. .308 Winchester
