Ketland Flintlock Musket, made circa the late 1700s to the early 1800s in turn of the century England. Thomas Ketland & Co. was a firearms manufacturer founded in Birmingham, England somewhere around 1760. Thomas Ketland Sr. was a highly successful Birmingham gunmaker. He started his business around 1760 and expanded into the export market around 1790. He died in 1816. The business carried on until bankruptcy in 1821. The company manufactured flintlock pistols and muskets, becoming quite successful in its field. John and Thomas Ketland were the sons of Thomas Ketland and grandsons of William Ketland, who had been making locks and guns for the colonies since the early 18th Century. The lock plate is marked “T./KETLAND”. The barrel, trigger, lock, barrel tang, hammer, frizzen, pan and spring are all iron with a brass trigger guard and trim. The barrel is part octagon with a beautiful full-length walnut stock, and the engravings on the lock are reserved yet handsome. If only this gun could tell us some stories. The overall condition is good. Mixed gray and brown patinas.. The stock remains solid with a repair at the muzzle end on the right side. A repair was made ahead of the lock. A sliver of the forend is missing on the left side at the muzzle. Strong action in it’s original flintlock. The markings are legible. The bore is dark but good for its age. Hand inscribed collector mark on the inside of the triggerguard. The buttplate tang is marked “1705”. Here is a great flintlock militia style musket from the late 1700s to the early 1800s!
