Cool Winchester Model 1886 extra light weight rifle in the desirable and hard-hitting 45-70 Gov't. caliber. Cody Museum records (see last picture, will be provided to buyer) indicate serial number 152434 as having a 22" round extra light weight barrel, smokeless Nickel Steel, 1/2 magazine, shotgun butt with rubber butt plate, warehoused and shipped September 14, 1914 on order number 588340 to T. McAvity Sons, Ltd. of St. John, Canada. This company was established by 1834. T. McAvity & Sons Limited can trace its origins to an ironmongers business which James McAvity opened in Saint John in 1834. In 1838 he added to his business by purchasing a hardware shop owned by James Hendricks, a local merchant and his former employer. The McAvity establishments expanded again in 1863 when James' sons, James H. and William, established brass and iron foundries which produced bronze bells, rudder braces for sailing vessels, and other items.
The Great Fire of 1877 destroyed the McAvity shops and foundries, but the businesses were soon revived. The firm shifted its focus from the declining shipbuilding industry to the rising railway industry. The new foundries manufactured plumbing material along with bearings, inspirators, whistles, locomotive valves and other products for the railroads. In 1907 the businesses were incorporated as T. McAvity & Sons Limited. After the Great War, the foundries, machine shop, and head office were brought together in a factory on the outskirts of Saint John that had produced shells for the war. Branch offices of the company were soon opened elsewhere in Canada and overseas (London). In 1955 a foundry was purchased in Medicine Hat, Alberta. G. Clifford McAvity, a grandson of Thomas McAvity, sold the family business to Crane Canada Limited in 1961.
CONDITION: Barrel retains 25% original thin blue turned patina with 40% plum blue in the protected areas around the rear sight and above the fore arm. The visible portion of the mag tube shows 40% fine aged blue. The receiver shows the same no blue, having totally worn and grayed out. The hammer shows 60% fine aged blue, and the lever has grayed out. The fore arm is solid with no splits or cracks, retaining most of the original varnish and color at the front half, carry wear back by the receiver. The butt stock has a chip at the toe and 3 splits on the right side (appears to have been dropped hard on the butt at one point in its life). Action is crisp and tight with a properly working half cock safety. Original sights include a Lyman #4 Hunting front and semi buckhorn rear with thumb print patent-dated elevator. The bore has fairly sharp rifling with just a hint of roughness/frost throughout, rated at a 7.5 of 10. This solid frame version is scarcer than the take down version of the Extra Light Rifles. Overall grades NRA Good and will make a fine addition to any Winchester collection, especially with the seldom-encountered shipper/buyer information shown in the records.
