James D. Mowry U.S. Model 1861 “EVERYMAN’S RIFLE”
Here we present an antique U.S. Model 1861 Rifle-Musket, made on contract by James D. Mowry of Norwich Arms Co. of Norwich, Connecticut circa 1863. Around 22,000 of these rifles came out of the Norwich contract. That’s a pretty small number, especially when you compare it to the total number of rifles made during the Civil War — over 1.5 million rifle-muskets right here in the U.S. Of those, more than 800,000 were produced by Springfield Armory alone.
The 1861, is what you’d call the “everyman’s” gun during the Civil War. It’s the last real hurrah for the old rifle-musket as technology and tactics started to move forward pretty quickly. But even with that, the 1861 was pretty advanced for its time — it was made for use with the Minié ball, a hollow-based, conical projectile that was small enough to slide down the rifled barrel easily, but then expanded to create a good gas seal. That was a game-changer compared to the old round ball.
Now, almost as soon as the war ended, the U.S. military started moving on from these muzzle loaders. They quickly adopted breech-loading rifles, and that marked the end of the musket as the standard frontline firearm in American history. When you look at the 1861, you’re lookin’ at a real piece of historical transition — old tech, new ideas, and the beginning of the modern era of firearms.
This .58 caliber rifle’s lock is dated “1863” and marked with a federal eagle and “U.S./NORWICH”.
The overall condition is good. Bright gray patina. Robust action. The stock is in very good shape with expected wear for its age. Stock sliver missing from the right side of the tang. Missing rear sight and ramrod. The bore is dark with serviceable rifling. The markings are legible. Barrel band springs are replacements.
