Here we present an antique British Brass Barreled Flintlock Blunderbuss, made circa the early 1800s in London, England. The blunderbuss is a firearm with a short, large caliber barrel. They are flared at the muzzle, frequently throughout the entire bore, and used with shot and other projectiles. The blunderbuss is commonly considered to be an early predecessor of the modern day shotgun, with similar military and defensive use. It was effective only at short range, lacking accuracy at long range. A blunderbuss in handgun form was called a Dragon, and it is from this that the term “Dragoon” evolved. The flintlock blunderbuss was the original coach gun, being a short, handy and devastating weapon at close range. It was used in many capacities, not the least of which were for Naval boarding or defending vessels, stagecoach and messenger companies, home defense and more. It was capable of firing up to 20 buckshot in front of 120 grains of black powder, according to Spencer Tucker in Almanac of American Military History, Volume 1. This particular example is likely to have been used in the War of 1812 on the side that didn’t win! There are no visible maker's marks on this blunderbuss, but this style dates to the early 19th century in Britain, and it has a pair of Tower cross scepter private proof marks of the style used up to circa 1810. The barrel is approximately 14 bore and flares to over 1-1/8 inches at the muzzle. The overall condition is very good. The stock and forend show expected handling wear throughout. A thin grain split is at the rear lock screw. Robust action. The bore is dark and remains good. Some verdigris is present. The breech markings are worn but legible with an obfuscated lock mark. Aged patina on the brass. A blunderbuss such as this, is what most people imagine a pirate crew using to commandeer an unsuspecting ship! Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 15-1/2 inches. Caliber: Approximately 14 bore flaring to 1-1/8 inches at the muzzle. Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast.
