This is an example of a late World War II K98 rifle that was manufactured at the Mauser factory in Oberndorf. Oberndorf has a long history of producing military small arms. Founded in 1811 by King Frederich the First of Wuerttemberg as an arsenal to produce muskets for his army, the facility was typical of many factories that sprang up during the Industrial Revolution. Mauser acquired the plant in 1871 and was the First Mauser Plant acquired which was located in Oberndorf, Germany. In 1898 the German Army purchased a Mauser design, the Model 98, which incorporated improvements introduced in earlier models. The weapon was originally chambered for the Patrone 88 and officially entered German service as the Gew. 98 on April 5, 1898. This remains by far the most successful of the Mauser designs, helped by the onset of two world wars that demanded vast numbers of rifles. At the start of World War II, the Führer demanded that the factory produce 70,000 Mauser rifles a month, and it delivered them with the help of 5,000 forced laborers from across Europe. This rifle has a "byf/44" marked receiver ring with the "Eagle/swastika" proofs on the receiver and barrel stamped out. The overall condition is good. Original gray patina has settled in. The stock is in very good condition with little wear. Strong action. Numbers match on the receiver, bottom tang, front end barrel band. The bore is bright with sharp rifling. This example is refinished. Mixed numbers. Cleaning rod is absent. Own the original! This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic. Barrel is 23-3/4 inches. Caliber: 7.92mm Mauser Overall condition as seen in photos. Very Fast. Very Safe. FREE SHIPPING. Will need to be sent to your local FFL or C&R licensee. This firearm is classified as a Curio & Relic.
