Description: Sale pending Jeff in Ohio! ******* Winchester Model 55 rifle, take down frame, 1/2 mag, plain walnut stocks, plain trigger, shotgun butt with typical Model 55 serrated steel butt plate and fluted comb, straight grip, having what Robert Renneberg calls in his book "Winchester Model 94 A Century of Craftsmanship, 2nd Edition" an "extreme rarity in a Model 94 or 55" - the Stainless Steel barrel, devised in the mid-1920s in an effort to solve serious bore erosion problems due to mercuric priming compounds. These barrels were initially an $8 upcharge but few made it onto guns due to the brittle nature of the material. They could not be blued and were thus given a black enamel finish which easily wore off with just light use. The barrel is the typical Model 55 style - 24" round extra light with ramped front sight and no muzzle crown. This example was made in 1928 by the serial number. CONDITION: The magazine tube extension, the portion of the barrel under the rear sight, and the protected portion of the floor plate ahead of the lever are the only locations that retain dark original finish, otherwise all metal is "in the white" having flaked and worn off. The take down is tight with no wobble. The action is crisp with a properly working half cock safety. The stocks show several nicks, scratches, scuffs and dings expected of a hunting rifle that's almost 100 years old. Original sights include a series 22 semi buck horn rear with 32B elevator and Sheard-type front. The bore in the Stainless Steel barrel is bright and shiny with sharp rifling, a 9.5 of 10. Overall grades NRA Good; will make a fine shooter, as well as must for the collector looking to add the Stainless Steel rarity to his or her collection. TERMS: No international sales and no sales to Alaska or Hawaii. Must ship to FFL or C&R licensee. Note New York State buyers must have the item shipped to a Class 1 FFL holder only, no C&R. Payment by bank check, USPS money orders, personal check, or GunTab. 3-day non-firing inspection. Buyer pays return shipping. Please have a competent gunsmith check it over if you intend to shoot it.
