Smith & Wesson Model 28 Highway Patrolman, chambered in .357 Magnum. This revolver is in excellent used condition, showing only light signs of careful handling and use. The blued finish is deep and clean, and the bore is bright with sharp rifling. Timing and lock-up are tight, as expected from a quality S&W N-frame revolver.
This Model 28 features a 6-inch barrel, factory checkered walnut grips, and the classic S&W adjustable rear sight paired with a ramp front sight. A true workhorse revolver, it was built on the same robust N-frame as the legendary Model 27, but offered in a more utilitarian matte-polished finish to keep costs down while still delivering S&W’s renowned quality and accuracy.
History of the Smith & Wesson Model 28
The Model 28, also known as the Highway Patrolman, was first introduced in 1954 in response to law enforcement agencies requesting a more affordable version of the prestigious S&W Model 27. While the Model 27 had a highly polished finish and detailed checkering, the Model 28 was designed as a no-nonsense duty revolver—retaining the same strength, accuracy, and performance, but with a more subdued finish for rugged service use.
The Highway Patrolman quickly became a favorite among police officers, highway patrol units, and security personnel across the United States throughout the 1950s, 60s, and 70s. Built to handle the powerful .357 Magnum cartridge, it was considered one of the most durable and reliable revolvers of its era.
