COLLECTOR NOTES:
The Winchester Model 1897 (commonly referred to as the Model 97) is one of the most iconic shotguns ever produced. Originally designed by John M. Browning, the 97 was the first truly successful pump-action shotgun — and remains a fan favorite to this day among military collectors, cowboy action competitors, and Americana aficionados.
This particular example, built in 1929, reflects its age with a well-earned patina across the receiver and barrel. It is not a trench gun nor a take-down model, but rather a full-length sporting configuration — a great representation of the many hard-working civilian guns that built Winchester’s legacy.
Mechanically, the action is smooth and solid. The bore is bright with visible rifling (see photos), and the bolt and internal components show the kind of honest wear that says it’s been used, not abused.
CONDITION OVERVIEW:
  • Bore: Bright and clean with no signs of pitting
  • Bluing: Original finish faded into uniform patina; no signs of refinishing
  • Wood: Solid stock and forend with no major splits or repairs; some small handling marks appropriate for age
  • Action: Cycles as it should; bolt lockup is positive
  • Collector Appeal: Excellent candidate for cowboy action shooting, restoration, or leaving just as-is as a well-aged display piece

NOTES:
This is a commercial-production model, not a military contract gun. It retains its original buttplate, original full-length barrel, and clear model markings on the receiver and barrel. All serials match. No import marks. No modern alterations.
