Description:
Excellent WWI DWM 1918/1920 Double Date 9MM Luger Regimentally Mkd.
Offered here for sale and just acquired is an excellent and scarce WWI period collectible DWM artillery luger with 1918-1920 double date which is additionally WWI regimentally stamped – a rare and fascinating piece.  The significance of the “double date” (“1918?1920”) is well known to German luger collectors. The "1920" stamp is not a manufacture date—it's a Weimar Republic property mark indicating the pistol was formally accepted into Reichswehr (military) service following the Treaty of Versailles, distinguishing it from clandestine or surrendered arms .
The original 1918 date marks its manufacture during WWI for Imperial German service. The subsequent "1920" shows it was retained and officially accounted for post?war . These “double?date” artillery Lugers are not just reworks—they are historically significant artifacts, bridging Imperial and Weimar military periods.
After WWI, many Lugers were inspected, officially rechambered, or modified and then stamped with "1920" when issued to police or military, often with added safety features. This applied to even artillery models (with 8?" barrels), though less commonly seen.
Serial Number “5894a” is typical of Luger serial numbering which ran from 1–9,999, then 1a–9,999a, etc., after reaching the initial numeric sequences. The suffix “a” suggests your pistol was made after one full cycle—so likely around mid?1918 or later. Combined with the 1918 date, it's consistent with late?war production.
In addition the inner grip strap is marked: “4.1.A.4.43.” This appears to be a unit or regimental marking, potentially denoting something like 4th Battery, First Field Artillery Regiment 4, Gun number 43.  Research from the Great War Forum online notes this unit may be the Field Artillery Regiment Prinz August von Preuben.-
Af far as specs are concerned this specimen has an 8" barrel as artillery model—rarer and desirable compared to standard 4" service pistols. It retains 97-98% original finish, all matching parts except the magazine, with a correct period wooden thumb?piece—excellent condition. The chamber is again marked with 1918 doubled by 1920, with intact Imperial proofs and the property mark. The Unit marking is on the inner grip  strap, adding provenance and historical context.
For the collector this pistol stands out as a scarce artillery (long?barrel) Luger with surviving double?date provenance. Historically significant, embodying Imperial, Weimar, and possibly police use transitions. In excellent original condition, vastly increasing appeal to collectors.
