This smaller, lightweight musket is commonly referred to as a fusil. Fusils such as these were made by gunmakers at large rather than by the national armory and would have been used by officers, fusiliers, volunteer regiments, and even militia units. The lock is marked “SANDWELL”. It features all brass mounts that are beautifully engraved. The barrel is marked “SANDWELL MINORIES LONDON”. The London sunken proof marks on the barrel are crowns over V, SS, and GT. The sideplate is engraved with a scene of a hunter shooting fowl with his loyal hound at his farm. It also sports a cast brass wrist escutcheon along with an iron ramrod. The engraving on barrel and tang are very crisp. This fusil follows the Brown Bess in form with its barrel secured by pins rather than bands. The barrel is 44-1/4” in length, a bit longer than the regular 2nd pattern Brown Bess of 42". These muskets were exported to the U.S. for militia service as well as for use as ships muskets, etc. As to officer's muskets, there was no official pattern which means that, while many are of smaller caliber, this was not a hard and fast rule. What is consistent is quality and practically every example displays a high level of. The overall condition is very good. Dark, smooth patina throughout. The stock is solid with a repair to the left of the trigger tang and other minor various splits are present. Stable crack halfway in at the forend. Worn lock markings, legible otherwise. Deep engravings throughout. Strong action. Original flintlock. Own the original! This is a legitimate antique and not a reproduction. Barrel is 44-1/4 inches.
