It features period Ivory grips and functions as designed. There are no broken or missing parts; however, there is speculation as to whether the flat loading gate is original or a professionally made replacement. The bore is bright with good lands & grooves. This 1875 Remington is from a descendant of a family that traveled from the Northeast to the Pacific Northwest during the early 1800s. I have seven more pictures available upon request. The Remington No. 3 Revolver - Model 1875, also known as the “Improved Army” or “Frontier Army”, manufactured from 1875 until 1889, was Remington’s attempt to compete with the Colt Model 1873 Single Action Army, also known as the SAA, Model P, or Peacemaker. Sadly for Remington, their design failed to meet the commercial success enjoyed by Colt’s model due to the Hartford firm’s two-year head start in production and sales. Due to Remington’s two-year delay in introducing their No. 3 Revolver, Model 1875 Colt had already secured contracts with the U.S. Army for sales of their Model 1875 Single Action Army revolver. This forced Remington to seek other marketing venues. Fewer than 650 were purchased by the U.S. Government for the Indian Police, while an additional 1,000 were sold to the Mexican government sometime around 1880. A contract for 10,000 was made by the Egyptian government, but only a very few were actually delivered due to their default on a contract with the U.S. Government for Rolling Block rifles. In the book “Remington Handguns” authored by Charles Lee Karr, Jr. & Caroll Robins Karr, page 127, the production of the Model 1875 Army Revolver has been estimated to be 25,000; however, this number could actually be 5,000 to 10,000 more according to other sources. The Remington No. 3 Revolver - Model 1875 was originally chambered in three calibers: .44 Remington Center Fire (aka .44 Government), .44-40 Winchester Center Fire, and .45 Colt (aka .45 Long Colt). Standard features included a fluted cylinder, walnut grip panels, a blued or nickel-plated finish with case-hardened hammer and loading gate, and a lanyard ring. Standard barrel length was 7-1/2 inches, although a very few revolvers were produced with 5-3/4 inch barrels.
