Description: Superb Early Peabody Civil War .50 Caliber Saddle Ring Carbine Offered here for sale and just acquired from a very prestighious collection is this classic Civil War vintage Providence Tool Peabody breechloading carbine. The Peabody action was invented by Henry O. Peabody of Boston; his patent was granted July 22, 1862. During the Civil War (1861?1865), the design was not fully adopted in quantity by the U.S. Army. A few sample carbines/rifles were submitted for trials around 1864. After the war, the Providence Tool Company (Providence, Rhode Island) acquired Peabody’s patent and began full production of the rifles and carbines under the Peabody name. Production is generally dated 1866?1871 for the major output. Although specimens were sent to the government late war the majority were produced just after. But As far as Civil War collectors are concerned the Peabody .50 caliber version is considered as a must to fill out a complete Civil war collection (and so referenced by Flayderman in his essential book on American Antique firearms. Total production (all models, rifles + carbines) is commonly cited at about 112,000 pieces. While the U.S. Army never formally adopted them in large number, some state militias (Connecticut, Massachusetts, South Carolina) purchased surplus or Peabodys post?war. Also many were exported (France, Spain, Mexico, Canada, Romania, Switzerland) in various calibers. One of the more common calibers for Peabody carbines/rifles. After the war many Peabodys were in .50 rimfire. This specimen is all original and is in superb condition. It appears to have seen very little if ANY use. The barrel retains 100% finish. The receiver 100% case colors as is other case colored parts. Bore is MINT. Many early versions of the carbine do not carry serial numbers. This appears to be the case of this one. This specimen certainly can occupy a lofty position in ANY – especially Civil War collections. MM Thanks for your bid.
