Description:
Serial #20573, .40 CF (most likely .40-50 Sharps Bottleneck), 32" octagon barrel with an excellent, bright bore. This is a very nice rifle that has a mottled gray and plum-brown receiver with some traces of original color case-hardening remaining on protected areas. The breechblock and hammer likewise have some of original bright blue remaining, with the balance turned to a mellow gray or gray-brown patina along the edges. The barrel retains about 75-80% of the original blue, with gray fading at the muzzle and along the edges of the barrel facets. The barrel is devoid of markings save for a "40 S" caliber marking on top at the breech. A period spirit level globe front sight with lollipop insert is installed, mated to a period Vernier rear target sight on the top tang. The original walnut forend and pistol-grip buttstock are in very good shape with minor handling marks and small blemishes scattered throughout the old oil finish. This is a really nice Whitney Rolling Block and rates fine condition overall. Antique;
