Description:
In the decades following World War II (and the subsequent Korean and Vietnam conflicts), shooting sports increased exponentially in popularity, as veterans came home and kept up on their shooting skills, as well as teaching future generations of the importance of firearms safety and proficiency. An affordable and equally enjoyable option for shooting enthusiasts was .22 rimfire firearms. Thus, a high demand for inexpensive .22s fueled a massive wave of rifles and pistols chambered in various .22 rimfire calibers; these guns were made by at least a dozen different manufacturers with even more brand names and sold everywhere—from department store fronts to mail-order catalogs and including premium special-ordered editions. One of the many rifles available was the Winchester Model 190. The Model 190 was made from 1967-1980 and its origins lie in the Model 290—in fact, the two are nearly identical, only the 190 features a less-premium wood stock without a raised comb or cheek rest. The Winchester 190 rifles were also sold as the Ted Williams Model 3T through Sears stores and catalogs. At its core, the Winchester 190 is a blowback-operated rimfire rifle chambered for .22 Long and Long Rifle rimfire cartridges. The barrel measures 20" in length and is equipped with open sights comprised of an elevator-adjustable rear sight and fixed dovetailed front blade sight. The receiver also features a dovetail rimfire scope rail. The rifle is fed by an under-barrel-mounted tubular magazine similar to one used on lever- and pump-action firearms and not uncommonly used on other rimfires of the era. In fact, the Winchester Model 15 lever-action rimfire rifle shares many parts and design concepts with the Model 190. This magazine is capable of holding 17 rounds of .22 Long or 15 rounds of .22 Long Rifle. This rifle's stock is satin-finished and made of an unknown hardwood. There is no checkering present on this stock. This Winchester Model 190 certainly shows some age, with some surface rust starting on the externals of the barrel and finish wear on the receiver and stock alike. However, the rifle operates smoothly and without flaws and the bolt and magazine follower seem to mate together well. The charging handle, though, is bent to a slight angle, but does not affect operation. This rifle does not include a box or case. Exact manufacturing date is unknown on this rifle, but it must have been a post-1968 model, due to the 'B' prefix on the serial number. .22 Long Rifle
