Short history & background
The Browning BLR (Browning Lever-Action Rifle) was designed to bring modern centerfire performance to a lever-action platform. Unlike traditional tubular-magazine lever actions, the BLR uses a detachable box magazine and a solid steel receiver, allowing it to safely chamber and feed spitzer (pointed) bullets and higher-pressure cartridges. The BLR has been produced in a variety of barrel lengths, stocks, and finishes to suit hunting and brush gun applications and has been popular with hunters who favor lever actions but want modern ballistic performance.
The .358 Winchester is a straight .35-caliber option based on the short-action .308 Winchester family (it is essentially a .308 case necked up to .358). It was introduced by Winchester to provide a powerful medium-range big-game cartridge for hunters who wanted the heavier .35-caliber bullet’s deeper penetration and terminal performance. In a properly tuned rifle, the .358 Winchester provides excellent energy on game at typical hunting distances with manageable recoil.
Combined, the BLR + .358 Winchester provides a robust, quick-handling hunting rifle capable of taking deer, black bear, and similar game with confident terminal performance, while retaining the classic handling of a lever gun.
