Description:
History of H.M. Quackenbush Co. (Herkimer, New York)
Henry Marcus Quackenbush (1847–1933) was an American inventor, gunsmith, and entrepreneur best known for his innovative work in air rifles and mechanical toys. He founded the H.M. Quackenbush Company in Herkimer, New York in the late 19th century and quickly became a major figure in American firearms and novelty manufacturing.
Quackenbush was awarded over 100 patents, with his most famous being the July 19, 1881 patent that launched his line of spring-piston air rifles. These were among the first affordable, mass-produced air guns in the United States — designed to be simple, safe, and suitable for both youth and adults.
Highlights:
  • 1880s–1900s: Quackenbush produced several air gun models, including the No. 1, No. 2, Junior, and "Safety" rifles, many with nickel finishes and walnut stocks.
  • Also produced:
    • Air pistols
    • Bicycle accessories (like foot rests and locks)
    • Kitchen gadgets (like nutcrackers and apple peelers)
    • Metal toys and mechanical novelties
  • Known for clever, durable, and affordable designs, his products were widely distributed through catalogs like Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward.
By the early 20th century, Quackenbush rifles had become popular training and target rifles, and are now highly collectible among antique arms enthusiasts. The company continued limited production into the 20th century, but air gun production largely ceased by the 1930s.
Today, H.M. Quackenbush is remembered as a pioneer of American air guns. His early rifles — like the No. 1 model — represent some of the earliest accessible shooting devices available to the public and are prized for their craftsmanship and place in firearms history.
