This scarce example of the Polish WZ.91/98/26 was converted from a Russian Model 1891 Mosin-Nagant rifle by the Polish arms depot Centraina Skladnica Broni during the interwar period, approximately between 1924 and 1927. These rifles were part of a national standardization effort to convert captured or inherited Russian rifles to chamber the 8mm Mauser cartridge—the official caliber of the Polish Army. This rifle bears matching serial numbers, with the bolt and magazine floor plate being arsenal force-matched during the conversion process. The finish has aged into a smooth blue-grey patina, with some honest wear. The hardwood stock exhibits light handling and usage marks, consistent with field service, but remains structurally sound. These rifles feature the distinctive Mosin-Nagant receiver re-barreled and retrofitted to accept Mauser-type ammunition, along with a Polish tangent rear sight and a modified handguard and upper band. The design reflects both practicality and necessity, bridging two firearm systems in the post-WWI Polish arsenal. The action is smooth and functions correctly. Rifles of this pattern saw service leading into WWII but are seldom encountered today in the United States, making this a particularly desirable and historical piece for collectors.
