Zastava Arms M70 AB2 – 7.62x39 – 16" Barrel – Underfolding Stock
Zastava is one of the better known, higher quality AK-style rifles on the market. The M70 was an unlicensed derivative of the Soviet AK-47 (specifically the Type 3 variant). Due to political differences between the Soviet Union and Yugoslavia at the time, namely the latter‚s refusal to join the Warsaw Pact, Zastava was unable to directly obtain the technical specifications for the AK and opted to reverse engineer the weapon type. Although the M70 was functionally identical to the AK, it had unique in-built features that better enabled it to fire rifle grenades. These included a thicker receiver, a new latch for the dust cover to ensure it would not be jarred loose by a grenade discharge, and a folding grenade sight bracket over the rifle‚s gas block, which also shut off the gas system when raised.
Our particular M70 AB2 comes from the batch that was manufactured by Zastava and then imported into the U.S. by Century Arms. It has a parkerized finish and, based on the markings being hard to read, the parkerized finish may have been added after manufacture. That’s our best guess. The left side of the rear sight has markings that say Zastava with the remainder of the line not being legible. The second line of those markings says Yugoslavia. The left side of the receiver is marked: M70 AB2, (next line) Cal 7.62x39mm, (next line) Century Arms, Inc, (next line) Georgia, VT, (next line) AB209205, which is the serial number of the rifle.
The rifle has a flip up front grenade sight in addition to the standard front sight post. The adjustable rear sights also have a set of flip over tritium night sights. The night sights no longer glow due to age. Sling loops are side mounted and a cleaning rod is stored under the barrel. The marked parts that we see are non-matching numbers, which is typical for most of this variant.
The parkerized finish is in Good condition with normal signs of use. The grip is also in Good condition. The underfolding stock functions as intended. The bore is ok, the barrel is bright and the rifling is evident with moderate wear. There is a slight bit of surface oxidation just forward of the rear sight and to the rear of the upper handguard. Most of this oxidation wiped off with minimal effort.
Overall, this is a nice example of a Zastava rifle that is in Fair – Good condition. The owner has it priced to sell and this is an out-of-the-ordinary AK that would be a nice addition to almost any collection.
