Description:
The Winchester Model 70 was introduced in 1936 as an improvement on Winchester single shot and bolt action lines and quickly gained the nickname “The Rifleman’s Rifle.”
  • Early Model 70s built before mid-20th century (the pre-1964 era in collectors’ terms) are especially prized for their pre-war / classic features: a controlled-feed action with a full-length claw extractor, solid one-piece bolt, and robust nickel-steel receiver and blued finishes.
  • A “Sporter” configuration (carved/trimmed sporter stock, 24" barrel options, hunting sights) was a common factory offering aimed at hunters who wanted a lighter, more handy rifle than a full target model. By 1940 the Model 70 was well established as a high-quality American sporting rifle.
Description
  • Year: manufactured 1940 (pre-war)
  • Caliber: .30-06 Springfield
  • Receiver / action: blued nickel steel receiver; mechanically solid action, controlled-feed bolt with matching serial number; pre-war bolt safety present
  • Barrel: 24" blued barrel; bore bright and shiny with good rifling; barrel blue shows light wear and light handling marks
  • Sights: adjustable semi-buckhorn rear sight paired with a brass?bead front sight
  • Magazine: internal fixed magazine fed from the top, with hinged floorplate
  • Stock: checkered walnut sporter grip stock — checkering distinct, finish with light carry wear, moderate handling marks and a couple small hunting scars; curved (checkered) buttplate;
  • length of pull (LOP): 13 5/8"
  • Fittings / extras: receiver front strap has two drilled & tapped holes  present
  • Accessories: sling loops
  • Condition: very nice overall condition; mechanically solid; light to moderate  overall handling/wear marks; bright bore and good rifling — very good for a used 1940 hunting rifle

COLLECTORS
  • Pre-war status
  • Matching serial on bolt and receiver and original configuration
  • Bore & mechanics: Bright bore with good rifling and mechanically sound action — this rifle is both a shooter and a collectible.
  • Finish & stock condition: Light barrel blue wear and light handling marks + distinct checkering with a few small hunting scars is consistent with a well-used but carefully kept sporting rifle
  • Sling loops / tapped holes: Drilled/tapped holes and included sling loops are practical and period-appropriate
  • Safety: Before firing an older rifle, have a competent gunsmith inspect headspace and overall safety; even mechanically good?feeling rifles benefit from a professional check after decades of service.

This rifle will be a GREAT addition to your future outings!
