Fine Vintage 1911 SL -Winchester’s 1st SA Shotgun
Offered here for sale and just acquired from a local estate is this Winchester Model 1911 S.L. (sometimes called “1911 SL” or self-loading)shotgun. Serial number 65453 the model was manufactured from 1911 to 1925 in regular production, and then apparently cleaned up with parts-assembly through about 1928.
This gun’s serial is 65,453 was manufactured in late 1921 The Winchester Model 1911 S.L. was the first semi-automatic (self-loading) shotgun produced by the Winchester Repeating Arms Company.It used a long-recoil operation and a somewhat unusual charging method (you pulled the barrel back via a knurled section rather than a separate charging handle) .
Production numbers were relatively low (≈ ~82,000–84,000 units. Because of the design flaws and safety issues, it didn’t enjoy the commercial success of later autoloading shotguns and was discontinued in regular production by 1925.
The specimen has a great deal of its original blued finish on barrel and receiver. The stock is sound although there are a few hairline surface cracks in stock. The bore is good and despite its use it is a relatively in very good condition for its extreme age.
